Tiling a high traffic area such as Amsterdam Central Station is a big challenge. Nonetheless, we were up for it. Joined by Merk X the Mosa team created a special floor tile that not only resembled the look and feel of the railway station but could accommodate the heavy flow of commuters too.
The Mosa 980 – custom made high traffic tile
The Mosa special 980MM, a custom made Solids tile, was designed and manufactured specifically for the Amsterdam Central Station project. Covering an area of more than 160,000 square feet the tile had to be robust but easy on the eye, smooth but with plenty of grip, and easy to clean. Above all, the flooring in the Cuypers building and Middentunnel had to blend in with the surrounding areas.
With around 295,000 visitors each day, the Amsterdam Central Station is the most heavily trafficked area in the Netherlands.
Full body porcelain with a sense of depth
With around 295,000 visitors each day, the Amsterdam Central Station is the most heavily trafficked area in the Netherlands. So then, the number one priority was to design a tile with exceptionally high abrasion and wear characteristics. For the Mosa Solids a combination of spray-dried granulates and fine and coarse flakes are pressed and fired at high temperatures, creating a robust full body porcelain tile with a visual sense of depth.
Getting to know Mosa Solids …
Ideal for public spaces and commercial areas, the Mosa Solids series comes in two surface solutions: smooth and micro-relief. The latter is ideal for high traffic areas, such as the Amsterdam Central Station, combining aesthetics and practicality. The standard tile size is 60 x 60 cm – an optimal size to cover larger surfaces, especially in high traffic areas. Mosa Solids tiles are exceptionally wear and impact-resistant, making them extremely durable and functional.
